Alumni Board Presents The Alumnus of the Year Award
 
Officers of the current Alumni Association Board pose with the Commissioner of Education for the state of Tennessee, Dr. Tim Webb at the presentation of the Columbia State Community College Alumnus of the Year Award.  Pictured with Dr. Webb from left to right are:

Dr. Timothy Webb, Commissioner of Education for the state of Tennessee was selected as the 2008-2009 Alumnus of the Year Award.  This prestigiouis award was presented to Dr. Webb at his office in Nashville on Tuesday, March 17, 2009.
 
Information on Dr. Webb and his career is listed below:
 
*Received the Outstaiding Student Education Award in 1985.
 
*Graduated Magna Cum Laude
 
Professional Career
 
*1980-2000: Member of the Tennessee National Guard (Retired)
 
*1990-1997: Middle School Teacher in Mathematics and Social Studies
 
*1997-2003: Served in Public School Administration  eventually becoming Superintendent of Lewis County Schools.
 
2003-Present: Served in the Tennessee Department of Education currently serving as the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Education making him a member of the Governor's cabinet and the Executive Officer of the Department of Education Committee.
 
Career Related Organizations
 
*Advisory Consortium Chair for Education Information Management.
 
*Chairman of the Middle Tennessee Superintendent's Study Council.
 
*Advisory Council member and Delegate Assembly member of the American Association of School Administrators.
 
*Memgber of the Tennessee Academy for School Leaders Advisory Council.
 
Community Service
 
*1999-Present: Member of the Lewis County Education Foundation.
 
*1999-Present: Member of the Lewis County Health Council.
 
*1999-Present: Member of the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce.
 
*2000-2007: Chairman of the Lewis County Youth Council.
 
*2003: Lewis County Chair for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
 
*2003: Chairman of the Workforce Investment Board serving on the Strategic Planing Committee.
 
Career Related Honors   
 
*2001: Named as a Finalist for Middle Tennessee Superintendent of the Year.
 
*2002: Named District Administrator of the year for Region 6 of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.         
 
*Appointed a member of Tennessee's Basic Education Program Review Committee and Governor Bredesen'sTask Force on Teacher Pay.  Dr. Webb is credited with improving the collection of student data statewide. 
 
*2006: The Council of Chief State School Officers appointed Dr. Webb to help shape a national effort to reform math and science education.
 
*In February 2008, Dr. Webb was appointed Interim Commmissioner of the Tennessee Department of Education by Governor Bredesen, and on July 24, 2008, he was sworn in by Governor Bredesen as Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Education.

The KEEP Society
 
Knowledge Empowers Every Person
 
The KEEP Society was started by the alumni Association.  This is a support group for the alumni scholarship fund.  we are asking all Columbia State alumni to join the KEEP Society for a minimum gift of $10 per year to support alumni scholarships.  All funds will be placed in the general alumni scholarship fund, unless you designate otherwise.  For example, you could specify your area of study.

A Web site designed specifically for alumni of Columbia State.  A very easy way to make contact with friends and classmates, as well as becoming a member of the Alumni Association - FREE OF CHARGE.  The Web site also allows for alumni to become involved in online giving, to develop personal and professional information files for reference by friends, colleagues and classmates.
 
The  KEEP Society is an organization of alumni, donating $10 or more per year, for scholarships to be distributed by the Alumni Association for needy students of Columbia State.
